Covid rate soars after Christmas
HULL AND EAST RIDING SEE BIG JUMP IN CORONAVIRUS CASES
GRIM figures have shown why we have been plunged into a national lockdown and the coronavirus infection rate across Hull and the East Riding is no different.
Both local authority areas have seen a significant weekly rise in cases as the latest wave of the virus takes hold.
The news comes as MPS retrospectively voted yesterday on the latest national lockdown announced on Monday by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
This time last week, Hull’s weekly infection rate was 227.9 per 100,000 of the population, but there has been 804 more cases in the past seven days, which means that rate has leapt to 309.5.
The East Riding has also seen a big rise in the infection rate from 152.4 to 220.1 with 751 new cases in the last week.
The latest rates come amid further depressing statistics released on Tuesday.
More than 500 people in Hull’s hospitals have now died after contracting coronavirus since the pandemic began.
The death toll made a huge leap towards the 500 mark on Tuesday when 11 deaths were confirmed by the trust that manages Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital.
The latest figures made Tuesday one of the deadliest days for Covid-19 related deaths.
Three deaths registered on Tuesday occurred on Monday, January 4, with two happening on January 3 and three on January 2.
However, the latest figures also include deaths on December 30 and 31, as well as one on December 23.
Nationally, the number of new daily confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK has topped 60,000 for the first time since the pandemic started.
According to the latest figures, the number of people who tested positive on Tuesday reached 60,916.
