We see Callum as a big part of the club moving forward, says Mccann

Callum Jones is the latest Hull City youngster to agree his long-term future with the League One promotion hopefuls, with head coach Grant Mccann challenging the Welshman to push the likes of George Honeyman, Richie Smallwood and Greg Docherty for a place in the first team.

Described as ‘unbelievable’ by Mccann earlier this season, the Welsh Under-19 international will remain at the KCOM Stadium until the summer of 2023 with the Tigers having the option to extend that by a further year.

Jones made his Tigers debut in the Papa John’s Trophy tie with Leicester at the beginning of the season, going on to register his first league appearance at Rochdale four days’ later.

His progression took on another upward turn when he was handed the captain’s armband by Mccann for the 2-0 Papa John’s Trophy win at Harrogate, a game which also saw him register his first goal for the club from the penalty spot.

Unfortunately, his season was halted after he picked up a hamstring problem in the FA Cup defeat at Stevenage at the end of November, keeping out of action since.

“We see Callum as a big part of the club moving forward,” Mccann told the club website.

“We like his versatility – the fact he can play in numerous positions in midfield. We’ve also seen him play at right-back but we see him predominantly as an attacking number eight.

“He’s got a really good mentality. He wants to work hard, he wants to get better every single day and he’s going to have a bright future here.

“We’re frustrated he picked up the injury when he did after the Stevenage game as I’m sure he would have had more appearances.

“He’s got people he can learn off in Greg Docherty, George Honeyman, Richie Smallwood, Regan Slater and Dan Batty, and hopefully he can push them to get in the team.”
