A BABY boy from Bransholme has claimed the top spot in the Hull Daily Mail’s Cute Kids competition for 2021.

Oisin Cahill, 16 months, has won the first prize of £500 after thousands upon thousands of votes were cast in the popular contest, sponsored this year by Sullivans of Hornsea.

His mum, Claire Cahill, said the news of the win was a “brilliant” surprise but her bonny boy does tend to draw admiring glances when he is out and about.

“Wherever we go, everyone comments about him, they say it’s his eyes and how gorgeous they are, he gets so much attention,” said Claire, who entered her son in the 10 to 18 months category of Cute Kids.

“We took him to Blackpool last September and were standing on the hotel steps when this young lad of about 14 or 15, who you’d think wouldn’t notice such things at all, did a double-take and said ‘his eyes are amazing.’”

Oisin, whose name is Irish, is the only child of Claire and her husband, Jonathan, and a very much longed-for addition to the family.

“We were trying for eight years before he came along,” said Claire, an outsource administrator, of Dalwood Close.

“He’s a really good little boy and he is so independent. You only have to show him something once and he’s picked it up.

“He loves cars and dogs – my husband runs a car club called

Outkast Panda Crew and Oisin comes with us.

“Jonathan had a removal business but he has let that go because of Covid-19 and is concentrating on getting Outkast set up as a community interest company where he can invite underprivileged young adults to come and develop a new interest and skills.”

Claire said she thought all the people who had been collecting tokens to vote for Oisin would be “really chuffed” by his win.

“We’ve had elderly neighbours in the street and their friends buying papers, members of the car club community, my clients and clients of clients supporting him.

“I think we will spend the money doing up Oisin’s nursery as it’s a bit babyish for him now – the theme will probably involve cars – and maybe have a few days out as last year we weren’t really able to do anything and it will be nice to take him to some places.”

The winner of the second prize of £300 is Jamie White, an entrant in the 0-9 months category, and third-placed Delilah Quance, who was also entered in the 0-9 months section, wins £200.

A spokesperson for the Mail’s promotions team, which organised the competition, said: “After such a difficult year, it was great to reintroduce the Hull Daily Mail’s popular Cute Kids competition and thanks to all the parents who entered their little cuties.

“We had some gorgeous pictures sent in and I’m sure not only did it bring some smiles to the parents seeing their little ones in the paper, but also to our readers as well.

“Having received some overwhelming numbers of votes for the first round, we then printed the top 41, who were voted for again, and we can now proudly announce our winner and runners-up, who will each be receiving a cheque.

“We hope they enjoy spending their winnings. A big thank you to all who entered and voted.”
