POLICE are investigating after a blaze at a Goole scrapyard continued to cause devastation into yesterday morning.

Firefighters were called to an industrial estate in Old Goole at around 4.30pm on Sunday and continued to tacke the flames yesterday, with “white smoke still billowing into the air and drifting towards the marina”.

As crews continued to fight the blaze around 17 hours after the alarm was first raised, Humberside Police said they were assisting fire crews and have launched an investigation into the cause of the outbreak.

The force say the cause of the fire is yet to be established, but that enquiries with the fire investigation team are ongoing.

Humberside Police also warned drivers that local road closures are in place, including Cottingham Street, for the safety of the public and to allow the emergency services to safely operate.

The “large plume of smoke in the area” has meant that residents have woken up to a putrefied plastic smell plaguing the air.

A spokesperson for Humberside Police: “Humberside police officers will continue to assist the fire service as they continue to be in attendance at a fire in Goole.

“The cause of the fire is yet to be established and we will be working with the fire investigation team as part of the enquiry.

“Local road closures remain in place for the safety of the public and to allow the emergency services to operate safely.”
