A WEBSITE created by young people in Hull aimed at helping their peers though the Covid-19 pandemic has won national acclaim.

The site, howareyoufeeling.org. uk, features blogs and videos made by young people encouraging others to stay positive during the various lockdown restrictions over the past 12 months.

It also includes advice, support and free downloadable guides on emotional and mental health issues, while youngsters can add their own views and information.

Now, the initaitive managed by the city council-run Headstart project has been recognised as national best practice by the Local government Association.

Headstart programme manager gail Teasdale said the original idea behind the website was to create a trusted source of information relevant to young people in Hull.

She said: “As with any technology which has significance in people’s lives, there has been a great deal of concern about the effects of social media use on young people’s physical and mental health and safety.

“While the focus is often on the potential risks and dangers and negative impacts, evidence has also been identified on positive impacts that may be associated with social media use.

“Negative impacts can include cyberbullying, impact on sleep and concentration and body image.

“However, positive aspects have also been identified such as the construction of social capital through creating and sustaining connections between people and thereby reducing loneliness.

“Improved access to online support and information is also a positive with online platforms and social media forums allowing connections between young people with shared or similar experiences, giving them the opportunity to engage in communication similar to a support group.”
