Is final whistle being blown on beloved sport?

- Peter Lowsley.

GREED; there’s no other word for it.

The big six football teams in England and another half dozen from Spain and Italy have decided to form a European Super League.

This will be an alliance of untold riches and as founder members, the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool, can never be relegated.

Businessmen like the Glazers at United have no sense of history regarding our national game. The mighty dollar is their only thought.

They claim that this new venture is a good thing. They say that the vast sums of money generated will trickle down the the football pyramid.

Now, where have I heard that kind of promise before? Oh yes, from every obscenely rich man ever, and it never works that way.

Football started as a pastime for the working class, but it hasn’t been that way for longer than I care to remember and it looks like the final whistle is about to be blown.
