Covid numbers low but 15 areas of Hull see a rise

SOME PLACES ARE NOT GOING THE RIGHT WAY

WHILE many have started enjoying the freedom once more with trips to the beer garden or the shops, Covid cases are still rising in many areas of Hull.

The numbers are generally low and the increases are very much in single digits in more than a dozen areas which have seen an increase in the past week.

Positive case numbers in the city are currently at their lowest since last September with a corresponding continuing reduction in hospital admissions.

But Hull’s deputy’s deputy director of public health Tim Fielding insists there should be caution. And it seems he is right to do so.

Hull remains one of the highest areas for the weekly infection rate in England, sitting in sixth with a weekly rate of 65.8 cases per 100,000 of the population. The England average is just 25.5.

Mr Fielding said: “Overall, it’s a positive picture, however that does continue to be considerably higher than the national average.”

During the pandemic, Public Health England (PHE) has produced a useful interactive map, which displays data showing the rates of coronavirus infection in different areas.

The map is colour-coded from white, where the virus is being suppressed, through to green where cases are low and then through gradually darker shades of blue as the numbers increase, then to a claret colour and finally to a dark brown.

The map provides the seven-day rolling rates calculated by dividing the seven day count by the area population and multiplying by 100,000.

Hull still has 15 areas which have seen an increase up until April 14.

Newland South - has seen a rise of seven cases with nine in total and a weekly rate of 99.8 cases per 100,000 of the population.
