A FIRE station manager has issued a warning to residents in Goole to stay away from the scrapyard fire that has been burning since Sunday afternoon.

Humberside Fire and Rescue were still tackling a blaze in Old Goole after flames continued throughout the night, causing a “large plume of smoke” and a stench of “putrefied plastic” in the area.

The fire crew were initially called, alongside police, at around 4.30pm on Sunday afternoon (April 18) to a fire at an industrial estate near the docks, which has since devastated a large scrapyard.

Station manager Richard Gibson, of Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, explained how crews “fought the fire throughout the night” and that despite dissipating smoke, residents should keep windows closed and avoid the area.

Mr Gibson said: “We have an incident overnight in a reclamation yard in Old

Goole. We had a number of appliances attend and maintain a presence throughout the night.

“At its height we had around ten of our appliances in attendance, which included our aerial appliances, we had our water support unit in attendance. We have also utilised the drone to get footage of the incident.

“We have fought the night.

“We brought the fire under control and we have put messages out to the members of the public and I want to reassure members of the public that the fire is under control.

“The message still remains: close your windows and please do not come to the incident at this time. fire throughout the

“We will maintain a presence here for the next few days and as we said we have got the fire under control – please do not attend.

“The next steps for us now is that we will maintain our appliances here. We are currently bringing in more resources.

“Currently we have got our water support unit set up around the docks at bridge street and we have got a hose form that water support unit which is going from that area right across to the incident.

“So we want to again just inform local people that that’s there and advise people just to stay away.

“We have had appliances in attendance from across Humberside from Driffield, Pocklington, Goole and Scunthorpe – it’s been an effort from the entire Humberside Fire Service personnel.

“We have had around 35 personnel continuously in attendance and as I said at it’s height around ten appliances and we’ve currently got seven appliances still in attendance.”
