TRIBUTES have been laid at the scene of a road accident which claimed the lives of a man and woman in their thirties but which a child travelling with them survived.

The pair sadly died after their red Peugeot 2008 collided with a black Mercedes GLA in Grindale Road, north of Bridlington, on Friday at around 3.30pm.

A child also travelling in the Peugeot suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure but was uninjured.

Humberside Police say the driver of the Mercedes is currently receiving treatment in hospital for her injuries, where she remains in a serious condition.

Police are now appealing for any witnesses to the crash to come forward in order to help with their enquiries.

The force added that the families of the victims, who have not been named, are being supported by specially trained officers and offered their deepest sympathies.

Yesterday, touching floral tributes in memory of the victims could be seen laid beside wreckage from the accident.

The accident near the junction with Grindale Road on the main road from Bridlington to Filey has sparked concerns in residents nearby as it comes just three years after another fatal crash.

Ryan Craven, 26, of Muston, near Filey, died when his Suzuki motorbike collided with a blue Land Rover near Grindale Road on March 30, 2018.

Floral tributes in memory of Ryan remain on the A165 at the Grindale Road junction just 150 metres from the scene of Friday’s tragic accident.

Residents say they have spoken to East Riding Council about potential calming measures in the area to avoid any future loss of life.

As well as numerous bouquets left at the scene, many have gone on to pay their respects to the man and woman on social media.

One said: “Rest in peace. Definitely highlights the importance of good car seats – the child only had minor injuries in a seriously fatal crash.”

Another paid tribute, writing: “Literally heartbreaking. So so sorry to all the family especially that little child.”

Another well-wisher said: “R.I.P, two young lives taken so tragic. Hope the child is OK and the lady in the other car. So sad my heart goes out to all families.”

A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said: “On Friday, May 7, at 3.30pm officers were called to a collision between a black Mercedes GLA and a red Peugeot 2008 on the A165 at the junction of the Grindale Road.

“The driver and passenger of the Peugeot, a man and a woman in their thirties, sadly sustained fatal injuries in the collision and died at the scene. A child travelling in the car was taken to hospital as a precaution but was not injured. The families of the deceased are being supported by specially trained officers and our deepest sympathies are with them at this extremely sad time.

“The female driver, and sole occupant, of the Mercedes sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment, where she remains in a serious condition.

“We are appealing for anyone who saw the collision or either vehicle prior to the collision to call us on 101, quoting log 338, of May 7, 2021.”
