Ex-councillor’s sexual assault trial date is set

THE trial of a former Hull councillor accused of sexual assault will take place later this year.

John Abbott, of Pearson Park, is accused of two counts of sexual assault.

He was due to stand trial last month, but following concerns for the health of his alleged victim, it was vacated.

Hull Crown Court has heard that the woman is now fit to give evidence and the trial will take place in August this year.

It is alleged Mr Abbott sexually assaulted a woman on April 3, 2019. He denies the charged put against him.

At the time of his first appearance at Hull Crown Court, it was heard he would continue to serve as councillor. He has now retired from frontline politics.

Mr Abbott will go on trial at Hull Crown Court on August 9 this year.
