Coronavirus cases surged in past week
INFECTIONS ARE INCREASING
THE number of Covid-19 infections in this area is beginning to rise as national trends are replicated in Hull and the East Riding.
In recent weeks, many areas of the UK have experienced something of a surge in infections due to the spread of the Delta variant.
The Delta variant has now become the most prevalent in this area and infections rates have risen alongside this, with a jump of more than a quarter in the city of Hull over the past week.
We will have to wait to see the effectiveness of the vaccination program as hospitalisations and deaths usually lag behind spikes in infections.
However, the region’s hospitals have still not reported any new deaths related to coronavirus since
May 1, suggesting that current precautions are still working.
In the week between June 12 and June 18, Hull reported 75 new cases of Covid-19, with a rolling infection rate of 28.9 cases per 100,000 people.
For the seven days between June 16 and June 22, there were 98 new cases of the virus, with a rolling infection rate of 37.7 cases per 100,000 people, an increase of 27 per cent on the previous seven-day period.
In the same data for June 12 to June 18, the East Riding recorded 129 new cases of coronavirus for rolling infection rate of 37.8 cases per 100,000 people over the week.
In the most recent data, the area reported 201 cases for a rate of 58.9 per 100,000 people, an increase of a staggering 73 per cent on the previous week.
