DRASTIC ACTION TAKEN TO PROTECT STAFF

FOUR Hessle pubs kept their doors shut yesterday after reports of “gangs” involved in a wave of violent trouble on Saturday night.

Some customers have suggested their decision is linked to disorder caused by travellers camped illegally in Pickering Park, one of the city’s largest traveller encampments in years.

The Norland in First Lane posted on their Facebook page: “We have taken the decision to stay closed today. We will be back tomorrow.

“We are really sorry to have to take this drastic action, but the safety of our guests and team is paramount.”

The pub was unavailable for further comment, but the trouble

seen on Saturday has been linked with the tens of caravans currently stationed in Pickering Park.

One commented on Facebook: “They turned up in gang loads around the pubs last night and were causing fights everywhere.”

The Three Tuns and The Fiveways, both in Boothferry Road, and Marquis of Granby in Hessle

Square, were also said to be closed. All three venues were unavailable for comment.

Another landlord from the area said: “All four of them are closed. I think I have got a good idea of what happened.

“Apparently, the travellers on Pickering Park caused trouble, that’s what I’ve heard.

“I haven’t had any problems, but I am keeping my eyes open today, that’s all I can do.”

One pub worker, who didn’t specify which pub he worked at, said: “We are one of four pubs closed today. Our colleagues down the road had a rough time last night, so safety first.”

Hessle residents were quick to show support for the affected pubs, which have only been reopened a short while due to Covid.

One wrote: “Hope you’re all safe.” While another posted: “Feel so sorry for the local businesses having to close.”

The traveller camp is subject to enforcement action taken by Hull City Council on Thursday.

Court proceedings are expected to commence today to evict around 90 caravans which arrived there on Sunday, June 20.
