SPIDERS nightclub has issued an update on its spiking safety rules, after a social media statement sparked controversy this weekend.

On Saturday, ahead of Halloween-loving punters heading to the beloved Cleveland Street spot, Spiders told customers how to protect themselves from spiking.

“’We would ask you to be aware of the amount of alcohol you consume during the night”, they said, before adding that the recent serge in spiking incidents in Hull is “so called”.

It comes after bars, pubs, and nightclubs in and around Hull have updated their safety precautions recently following a number of spiking cases reported in the city.

Late night venues including Atik, Fuel, Propaganda, and The Piper have brought in measures such as stricter bag searches on entry and anti-spiking bottle tops and drink covers.

Spiders’ update left customers unhappy, with some saying their statement was “victim blaming”, as others added the club should be “ashamed” of their approach to spiking.

The statement began with: “To all customers. Regarding the so called spate of drink spiking, it is in your own hands to protect yourself and others.”

Spiders issued a follow up announcement on Saturday evening which read:

“The reason we used the term (so called) in the last post is because drink spiking in no way justifies the seriousness of the offence, it should be actual bodily harm or even stronger.

“If our last post is read in full and not just the first few lines, it shows how strongly we feel about such dangerous and life threatening practices. All our staff are fully aware of the situation and will act accordingly.”

The follow up sparked more comments from customers with one individual called staff “tone deaf”.

Another said: “You need to apologise and clearly state what you’re going to do to make Spiders a safe place.”

A third said: “Instead of this pathetic post, why not post about the strategies you’re willing to carry out to protect young customers.”
