HULL’S worst accident blackspots have been revealed, with nearly 5,000 casualties reported on the city’s roads in just five years.

Even with the roads being quieter throughout the pandemic and lockdown, there were still 124 serious or fatal collisions on Hull’s roads in 2020.

Overall, there were 697 casualties on the city’s roads involving all types of motor vehicles in 2020, which was a huge drop on the previous year’s total of 931.

There have been 4,577 casualties since 2016, of which 43 per cent have been travelling in a car, 24 per cent have been cyclists and 15 per cent have been pedestrians.

Using the open data on Crash Map, Hull Live has pinpointed the worst accident blackspots in the city over the last year.

The worst in the city as of last year is the area outside Hull Royal Infirmary on Anlaby Road, where there were three serious collisions and two fatal collisions.

Two of the serious incidents involved two vehicles with one

casualty each and the other was a single vehicle road traffic collision (RTC).

One fatal incident involved two vehicles with two casualties, while the other other was a singlevehicle RTC with one casualty.

Another area with a high number of serious incidents was Spring Bank between Princes Avenue and Peel Street, where there were four single-vehicle RTCS involving one casualty.

Another area of significant concern for motorists and other road users was the Southcoates Roundabout on Hedon Road, where there were four serious incidents in the last year of data.

At this major junction there were two incidents involving three separate vehicles, one of which led to two casualties and the other resulting in one person injured.

There was also another singlevehicle, single-casualty RTC and one further incident which involved two vehicles and one casualty.

Hull Live contacted the local

councillors in both Central Ward and Southcoates to get a local view of the issues on these stretches of road.

A spokesperson for Hull City Council said: “In its role as the highway authority, Hull City Council receives accident data from the police and other sources.

“Accidents can be caused by a number of issues, including in-car and external distractions, health issues, and motorists not driving to the road conditions.

“The volume of traffic along a road also gives context to the proportion of accidents on any given stretch or junction.

“While open data can be useful for individuals to potentially highlight issues, the more detailed analysis that goes on behind the scenes to try to understand the cause of an accident, together with any opportunity to mitigate any recurrence, is vital.

“Where it is identified that improvements can be made, these are considered in future highway developments.”
