Roads and car parks flood as 10 days of rain hits the region
AREA BATTERED BY HEAVY SHOWERS
ROADS and car parks were flooded as ten days of rain hit Hull in just a few hours on Sunday morning.
Heavy rain lashed Hull and the East Riding on Sunday, causing difficult conditions for drivers across the region.
The Met Office confirmed that 20.6mm of rain fell at East Park in Hull in the 24 hours from 5pm on Saturday – most of which came on Sunday morning.
The average rainfall for Hull in October is 60mm, meaning a third of a month’s rain fell on the city in just one day.
Drivers were warned of extremely difficult conditions with standing water on many roads across the area, including the A63.
There was also flooding underneath the railway bridge on Chanterlands Avenue.
One driver said: “Just a warning substantial surface water on A63 travelling out of the city.”
Another said: “Just be aware, there is major flooding on A63 at the Mcdonald’s turning, waters about 2ft deep. Can’t see **** all when cars are going through it so take it steady.”
People across Hull have shared pictures of car parks and roads which had been flooded, including Harland Way in Cottingham and a B&M car park in the city.
The Met Office said the conditions were made worse by a band of “squally winds” and issued a yellow weather warning.
The Environment Agency also put a flood alert in place for the
North Sea coast at Bridlington.
It said: “Overtopping waves and spray are expected as a result of strong winds and high waves.
“Please take care around exposed promenades and roads where spray may create hazardous conditions. Our incident response staff are closely monitoring the situation.”
A Met Office spokesman confirmed Hull had been hit by 20.6mm of rain, saying: “We have an area of low pressure centered around Scotland and a weather front wrapped around that. We have got areas or showers or longer spells or rain merging.”
