BARNSLEY have become the latest struggling Championship side to dispense with their manager, after parting company with Markus Schopp after just five months in charge.

Schopp leaves after the Tykes suffered their seventh successive loss at the weekend with a 2-1 defeat to Bristol City, who were without a win at Ashton Gate in 17 games.

Barnsley are second from bottom in the Championship with only eight points, and sit a point behind Hull City with the pair set to meet at Oakwell on Saturday in what’s shaping up to be a relegation six-pointer, even at this early stage of the season.

His departure comes hot on the heels of Mick Mccarthy, who left Cardiff City late last month after eight successive defeats left them teetering on the edge of the drop zone.

Joseph Laumann is set to take charge for the midweek game against fellow strugglers Derby County at Pride Park, though there has been no confirmation about who will be in the hotseat against the Tigers.

“I would like to thank all those who have accompanied me in this short but very intense time,” the Austrian told the Tykes’ club website.

“It is a pity that our hard work was not reflected in the results.

“I wish the club all the best for the future and that they will achieve all their goals.”

Chief executive Khaled El-ahmad said: “On behalf of everyone at Oakwell, I would like to thank Markus for the last few months and wish him well for the next step in his career.

“I would like supporters to know that the process for finding a suitable replacement is underway and we will announce a new appointment in due course.”
