EXTREME weather is expected today and tomorrow as Storm Arwen wreaks havoc on Scotland and northern England.

The storm will bring high northerly winds southwards across Scotland this afternoon and evening. Gusts of 65 to 75mph are expected in coastal areas, with gusts in excess of 75 mph in a few places.

While Hull should escape the worst of the wind today, it will be considerably more exposed tomorrow.

Later tomorrow winds will start to slowly ease over Scotland and then northern England during the course of the day.

Speaking to Hull Live, a spokesman for the Met Office said: “Hull can expect strong winds as Storm Arwen moves in off the North Sea and works its way down the eastern coast of the UK.

“The yellow wind warning will cover most of the UK on Saturday, bringing gusts of up to 65mph. Hull and other more exposed areas could see coastal gales rising above the 65mph mark.”

For areas affected by the worst of the winds, the Met Office warns of injuries and danger to life from flying debris, as well as some damage to trees, temporary structures and buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs.

Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible.

Some roads and bridges may close and power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.

Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.

The public are advised to dress appropriately and check travel updates over the weekend until Storm Arwen has passed.
