IT’S a much-loved film series, but did you know that one of the most important Harry Potter scenes was filmed in the Yorkshire Dales and that the site can be visited for free?

A pivotal scene in the seventh film - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One - was filmed at Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales.

The location is impressive in its own right, as a spectacular limestone rock formation.

In the film it’s the first location Harry and Hermione go to after Ron leaves them. The pair sit on and walk across the rocks in the twilight, discussing a clue left to them by Professor Dumbledore.

Harry is left a magical treasure in Professor Dumbledore’s will.

In the two minute scene at Malham Cove, the artefact suddenly spurts into life and reveals, in mysterious charmed writing,: “I open at the close.”

The cliff formation at Malham Cove stands at roughly 230 feet in height, and is curved like an amphitheatre.

But while impressive from ground height, it’s said that the top of the structure is the most dramatic.

Here the limestone has formed with deep cracks in between, almost like stepping stones.

Vegetation, including small trees, have grown in between the rocks.

There are several routes to get up to the top of Malham Cove - and the views on a clear day more than make up for the trek. You can walk from the picturesque village of Malham straight to the cove, where a long, flight of steps takes you to the top.

There are other natural wonders to take in within walking distance.

Gordale Scar is a hidden gorge with a crashing waterfall at the end of it.

Some walking routes involve scaling the waterfall itself, but this is only recommended for experienced scramblers. A much easier path cuts out the tricky incline and sees the walker follow the stream as it weaves through the gorge before emerging at the foot of the falls.
