Readers react as face masks rules to return

COVERINGS TO BE COMPULSORY IN SHOPS AND ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT

- By GREGORY FORD gregory.ford@reachplc.com @Fordwrit

IN a briefing to the nation on Saturday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that face coverings are once again to become mandatory in shops and on public transport.

The new Omicron coronavirus variant, which has been found in Nottingham and Essex, is considered to be quicker spreading than previous ones and has sparked the Government into early action.

To help stop the spread, Johnson has urged shoppers and those using public transport to once again wear face masks as protection against the spread.

The news has not come as a surprise for many as the reintroduction of certain restrictions had been discussed ahead of flu season regardless of a new variant being discovered.

Here is what Hull Live readers had to say about the new rule change:

‘The rules shouldn’t have been changed anyway’

Dean Postill said: “Should have never been stopped in the first place or social distancing, simple little measures that provide you with a lot protection.”

Neil Daley said: “Good ... don’t want other restrictions to return, but requiring face coverings in shops, etc, should never have been lifted.”

Louise Weston said: “Good, should have always been mandatory anyway.”

‘We never stopped wearing them’

Shellie Potts said: “Don’t see why everyone has a problem with wearing it, if people don’t it’s their choice but don’t moan when he locks us down again. I’ve not stopped wearing mine.”

Val Lakin said: “The majority of people in our village are still wearing masks in shops, etc.”

Tony Cooke said: “I will continue to observe social distancing and mask wearing as much as I can.

“Every time we have had restrictions, cases have gone down. Every time restrictions have been lifted, cases have gone up.

“I have known people who have suffered and died from Covid. I care about others, so I will try to protect them. I know people say they are ‘bored’ with the restrictions.

“Well, I’m sorry, but perhaps people should take a look at some of the documentaries on TV about the two

world wars, etc, and consider what previous generations have suffered. Keep safe, everyone.”

Tina Trice said: “Worn one and still do, no problem in wearing one. I’d rather protect myself and family and the elderly I work with.

“No problem on my side, should never be allowed to stop it or we are heading for another lockdown.”

‘It is either this or lockdown’

Mary Stewart Hewson said: “For people that don’t have a clue, the choice is actually a very simple one.

“Would you prefer to have small control measures now, eg wearing a face covering in crowded areas, maybe vaccine passports for large events to keep the virus in order, or would you prefer to do nothing at this present time and run the risk of a full on lockdown being required?”

Linda Foster said: “I will do anything to help stop the spread. The antimaskers will be singing a different tune when they are in hospital expecting NHS (who wear masks) to look after them!”

Chris Salter said: “Don’t understand why people have to be so militant about it all, it’s for your own good!”

‘I won’t wear a mask again’

Chris Smith said: “Not a chance, if you don’t like it, don’t leave your house. Nothing will change for me.”

Kath Ness said: “They do not work, this is control, when will people see this?”

Carl Beech said: “People are so weak and gullible. Get ya masks back on there’s a good little citizen. The fact absolutely everybody knew this was going to happen a month ago is just embarrassing.”

Julie Spice said: “Can you still go to theatre? Oh and parties, oh pictures, oh and swimming baths and all other public places and not have to wear one. I will not be wearing one!”
