A PAIR of brothers beat up a man at Hull Paragon station in a “prolonged and persistent assault”, leaving the victim with cuts to the face and bruises.

Liam and Stephen Worthington came across the man at the station on May 16 after an earlier incident where the victim reportedly threatened a girlfriend of one of the brothers.

The siblings appeared before Hull Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, November 24, and both pleaded guilty to assault by beating.

On the evening of May 16, the male victim was walking with his partner when confronted by the brothers.

The eldest brother Stephen Worthington, 27, threw a punch to the man’s face and threw further punches.

After the man had fallen to the ground, Liam Worthington, 25, also kicked him repeatedly.

An ambulance attended the scene, but the male victim did not require medical treatment.

Neither brother had any previous convictions.

Mr Nicholson, acting in mitigation for both brothers, said: “Your worships, I would like to think you would feel this is not a custodial case. I deal with many similar cases at the police station where they are just cautioned.”

Instead, he requested a fine or community order for both defendants.

Emphasising to the court that he was not victim blaming but providing background, Mr Nicholson said the victim had been threatening the girlfriend of one of the defendants earlier in the evening.

The man had been “shouting and screaming” at the girlfriend and when the brothers chanced upon him later at Hull Paragon, they set to confront him about the earlier incident.

“Both of them say they feel stupid and both of them say if they had their time again, they would do it differently,” added Mr Nicholson.

“It’s just unfortunate that they blotted their copybook on this night.”

After a short adjournment, the three magistrates, led by presiding chair Michael Cotes, passed sentence for each brother.

Liam Worthington, of Dulverton Close, Hull, was ordered to pay £477 in total, made up of a fine of £218, compensation of £150, a surcharge of £34 and court costs of £85

Stephen Worthington, also of Dulverton Close, Hull, was ordered

to pay a fine of £276, compensation of £150, a surcharge of £34 and court costs of £85, a total payable of £545.

In a victim impact statement read out in court by Kelly Sandilands, acting for the prosecution, the male victim said: “The incident has left me feeling scared to go out.”
