THE highly-anticipated opening of Hull’s new food hall happened yesterday, as Hammonds of Hull officially opened its doors to the public.

From 8am, shoppers were welcomed into the new jewel in Hull’s shopping scene and were even treated to live music as they enjoyed a drink in the café.

Jeremy Seymour has been part of the team who helped bring the HOH vision to life.

He said: “It’s been a journey, from House of Fraser closing to having this vision. It’s just incredible to see it realised.

“We’ve got the artists here, live music, DJS, food and drink.

“It’s going to be amazing and it’s great to see it all coming together at last.”

The former House of Fraser unit formed a hole in the heart of the city centre when the department store closed its doors in 2019, after the company fell into administration the year before. Since then, the historic building has undergone a dramatic facelift, transforming the ground floor into an artisan food hall featuring food items from around the world, as well as a large selection of other products and fresh produce.

Peter was one of the first shoppers in the new store.

He said: “I remember when it used to be Hammonds, it was a good shop then.

“I think you’ve got to be careful because people are often looking for something a bit cheaper if you know what I mean? I’m in town everyday so I’ll be popping in now and then. It does look nice.”

Over the weekend, shoppers can expect live music, food and drink, offers and shopping galore at the store.

However, shoppers cannot pay using cash in-store, only card payment will be accepted and the shop also does not contain any trollies. Instead, wheelie baskets are available for carrying items around the store.

Councillor Daren Hale, leader of Hull City Council, said: “This is an incredible redevelopment of one of the city’s most prominent and iconic buildings. The stunning food hall is home to a wide-range of brands, many of which are local to the area.

“Hammonds of Hull will play an important role in supporting the city’s booming and diverse independent scene.

“The Hammonds redevelopment is key to the city’s ongoing regeneration, as we bounce back from the pandemic and continue to grow our reputation as one of the country’s most exciting and unique destinations.”
