You were outstandingly fortunate not to be locked up then and there ... I am afraid that you have had your chances and you have run out of luck

Judge David Tremberg

THE ringleader of a “targeted, cowardly, repeated attack” against a defenceless man in the street loudly cried and wailed as he was finally jailed for the brutal beating.

Sex offender Callum Hockeyparks was “outstandingly fortunate” not to be locked up in the first place for the “disgusting” offence.

But he threw away a “golden opportunity” to avoid prison by making “lamentable” efforts to comply with a court order and had now “run out of luck”, Hull Crown Court heard.

Hockey-parks, 21, of Warn Avenue, Hedon, was originally given a one-year suspended custodial sentence on April 24 for affray.

But he admitted breaching the terms of the order, 30 days’ rehabilitation and 150 hours’ unpaid work, by failing to keep appointments with the probation service on October 16 and November 13.

He had already been on a suspended sentence for a sexual offence from May 2019 at the time that he was given the earlier chance.

Michael Forrest, prosecuting, said that the affray happened in December 2019 after two men and a teenager, including Hockeyparks, targeted a man when he got off a bus in Hedon.

Hockey-parks shouted “Oi!” and the three crossed the road and went over to him.

Another man pushed him into a wall, Hockey-parks punched him in the face and all three began hitting and kicking him as he lay on the ground.

The victim tried to defend himself and Hockey-parks said: “There are people getting out of their cars. We need to go now.”

The victim was taken to hospital and suffered a wound to his eyebrow area that needed four stitches.

The incident had left him afraid and he needed to take two days off work.

He was terrified that he might be attacked again by the men again.

The previous hearing was told that the 18-year-old victim had been subjected to tirades of abuse for a rape allegation that was not taken further.

Nigel Clive, mitigating, said that Hockey-parks had shown “lamentable” efforts after being given the suspended sentence.

“He has been given chance after chance and he hasn’t taken it,” said Mr Clive.

Hockey-parks had been “reduced to tears” when he was told that he faced being jailed.

“He has got a lot of growing up to do and he had better do it fast,” said Mr Clive.

“In prison, he will be a very small fish in a very large pool and that truth has hit home to him.”

Judge David Tremberg told Hockey-parks: “You and two others carried out a targeted, cowardly, repeated attack on a man on his own, including the use of a bat.

“It was a disgusting offence. You were already subject to a suspended sentence.

“You were outstandingly fortunate not to be locked up then and there.

“The court gave you a golden opportunity to put all this behind you. The court expected full compliance from you.

“Instead, your response to the community aspects of this order has been way below standard.

“They have been characterised by your own counsel as ‘lamentable.’ That is an accurate characterisation of your efforts or lack of them.

“You have demonstrated that you are unable or unwilling to co-operate with the community aspects of the order.

“I am afraid that you have had your chances and you have run out of luck.”

Hockey-parks was jailed for eight months.

At the time that Hockey-parks was given the suspended sentence for the affray, Recorder Taryn Turner had told him: “Don’t let me down. Don’t let yourself down and don’t let your families down.”

In the end, he did let all of them down.

As the prison sentence was passed, Hockey-parks cried and wailed uncontrollably, told his mother “I’m sorry, Mum” and begged to be given another chance.
