Bad weather has decimated golf Alliance matches

-

ADVERSE winter weather comprising storm force winds, rain and snow put paid to all but one of the local pre-christmas alliances with the Humber Alliance, the East Yorkshire Ladies Winter Golf Alliance, the Scarborough &

District, the Flamborough Rabbits and the Hull & District Ladies all suffering at least one cancellation.

The only December event to survive was the East Riding Alliance at Ganstead Park, but with the long Holderness course coupled with challenging weather conditions presenting the toughest of tests for the 56 participating pairs many players will have wished they had stayed by the fire with better ball scores in the high 70s not uncommon along with with five pairings finishing the wrong side of eighty.

Best returns on the day came from Cottingham Parks G. Myers & S. Corbett and Scarborough South Cliff’s P. Morton & B. Watson both pairs finishing on five-under-par totals of 67. Just under one fifth of the field were able to break the 70 barrier.

Filey continue to dominate this season’s Hull Daily Mail Challenge Bowl, demonstrating in the telling conditions at Ganstead Park that they will be hard to beat as both their counting pairs broke par, enabling the seasiders to extend their lead at the top by a further four shots that gap now being 12.

Bracketed together in second spot are Selby and Scarborough South Cliff with Hessle in fourth.

Holders Pike Hills lie equal seventh, albeit 20 shots off the pace, and they will have to up their game in the second half of the season if they are to retain the Bowl.
