Villagers win to keep the pressure on

-

NORTH Ferriby FC snapped their three-game winless run with a 2-1 victory at FC Humber United.

Goals from Josh Whiteley and Danny East keep the pressure on league leaders Hallam.

It wasn’t a vintage performance as Ferriby struggled to get their normal passing game going on a difficult pitch.

Manager Chris Bolder said: “Sometimes when you are on a bad run, like we were, any way you take three points is important.

“If you look at the balance of play, especially the first half, we completely dominated the game.”

When asked about the performance of the opening goal scorer Whiteley, Bolder said, “He’s got bags of energy and pace to burn.

“We played a slightly different system to allow him to play up top with Tom Corner and I thought coming off at half-time this system is working, we are getting numbers forward and good options.

“In the second half we have a chance early on and then once they’ve scored we’ve panicked a bit.”

It was a game that didn’t have many clear-cut chances.

Corner went close from a few yards out but was foiled by the FC Humber keeper Howard.

Whiteley opened the scoring when he was slotted through on the right hand side of the box and fired home.

FC Humber winger Baxter gave the Villagers a warning shot as he fired an effort over the bar.

Danny Emerton had an effort that went over the bar, which was the last attempt from either side in the first half.

The second half opened with an effort from Corner which hit the side netting.

It was the hosts who scored shortly after through Brandon Burke. A cross came in from the left and Burke headed past a wrongfooted Lewis Exall.

East went close with a free-kick tipped over the bar by Howard.

Last-ditch defending from Humber denied the Villagers and Whiteley fired a shot wide.

The game’s winner came when a Humber defender was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area.

East stepped up and he put the ball into the opposite corner to the one Howard dived towards.

There was a late scare as Burke lined up a free-kick on the edge of the area after a foul but hit his shot into the wall.
