A HUMBER Street bakery has been voted the “best bakery in East Yorkshire” at the National Bakery Awards.

Popular artisan bakery Flour and Feast won the prestigious title after the awards, organised by Bakery Business, returned from a three-year hiatus to select the winners from each county.

Bakeries were nominated before being weighed, measured and deliberated upon at length by a team of industry experts at Bakery Business.

Co-owners Roxana Avery and Joseph Roper said they were shocked they had won as they did not know they had been nominated.

“It was totally unexpected so we’re absolutely thrilled!” they added. “It might seem a small thing but after working so hard over the last few years it’s really great for us and our team to receive some recognition.

“We announced it on our Instagram and received so many lovely comments and well wishes. The same when they’re in the bakery too, lots of congratulations. It’s been really uplifting.”

Last month, Flour and Feast announced they were expanding their store as demand rose. They will be taking over the available unit next to their current store.

The kitchen will be expanded and more seating space created for customers. Renovation will be carried out between Monday, May 15, to Tuesday, May 23, and the bakery will be shut during this period.

Joe and Roxana said: “Having more space will give us the opportunity to expand our range of baked goods further. We won’t be running a service as that’s not what we do but we’ll gradually be introducing new items onto the menu. The main reason for expanding is to offer our customers more seating and a more relaxing space.”

In July, Flour and Feast will compete against other county winners from the Yorkshire and Humber region for a regional title, but the owners say they are already very pleased with the award they have won, and are looking forward to meeting other bakers at the finals.

They said: “We’re just happy to have received this award, it’s flattering to be in such good company. There are some amazing bakeries on the list. We don’t expect to go any further just yet, but it will be a great opportunity to meet other bakers and people in the food industry.”

The grand final will be held in London on Wednesday, July 12.
