A fun event raising much-needed cash for worthy causes

ANNUAL PRESIDENT’S PRESENTATION NIGHT AT THE WILLOWS SPORTS AND SOCIAL CLUB

- The latest news from clubland with Dave Norman

THE Willows Sports and Social Club on Holderness Road, east Hull, is holding its yearly President’s Presentation Night, which is traditionally held in aid of Hornsea Inshore Rescue Service and the charity Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Set for next Wednesday, May 17, the event is organised by concert secretary Cliff Griffiths who holds the night in memory of his brotherin-law, Bernard Monk, who died of pulmonary fibrosis.

Cliff said: “The charity was in desperate need of funds, so along with the committee we decided to put on a fundraising night.

“The club also owns a boat called Neptune 3 based at Bridlington and it was decided by the committee and members that Bridlington

RNLI should also benefit from the fundraising and it was changed to the Hornsea Inshore Rescue Service as they rely totally on donations.”

The annual event is now in its 11th year and over time it has raised well in excess of £25,000.

To make the evening a little different, the night will see a host of local names take place in a special Tribute to the Stars.

Among those set to appear includes the ever-popular Ric Owen as Neil Diamond. Ric has been performing his Diamond tribute for over five years, singing the classics from the day, including Cracklin’ Rosie, Hello Again and, of course, the evergreen classic Sweet Caroline.

A professional entertainer for over 40 years, the established singer Hutch will be performing a set from his celebrated Meatloaf tribute show.

Female vocalist Leah will be performing her Motown tribute set with hits from the likes of The Supremes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and Gladys Knight & the Pips, and high-energy vocalist Louise will be performing her very successful Northern Soul dance set.

Around a year ago local singer and ex-performing arts student

Lillie Kerman had just started to introduce her tribute to the music of Adele. Having worked with Lillie quite recently, not only does she look like her, Lillie’s excellent vocals are first class.

Award-winning vocalist Liam Alexander’s homage to the sounds of The Bee Gees and Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons is probably the most vocally challenging of them all and with a set list to die for.

Hull Live’s Star Search winner Rachel Mills will bring her 1940s tribute to the night with songs and costumes making for true 1940s authenticity and the night will also feature a set from one of the show’s organisers Leanne Smith.

All of the artists are giving their time for free and if past years are anything to go by, the evening will be a great success.

I’m honoured to once again be hosting the charity evening as it’s always a fun event raising some much-needed funds for worthy causes.

Tickets. priced £5. are available from The Willows Club or by calling Cliff on 07932 610461.

LOCAL tribute band The Creedence Collection pay tribute to the music of Creedence Clearwater Revival and its main songwriter John Fogerty. They draw on a wonderful catalogue of songs with classic hits including Bad Moon Rising, Have You Ever Seen The Rain and Up Around The Bend and an exceptional line-up of musicians from the East Yorkshire area fronted by Lynn Blakeston and Rob Nicklas.

Between 1968 and 1972, Creedence Clearwater Revival were the most successful rock band in the history of American music and John Fogerty was CCR’S main songwriter. He went on to have a successful solo career with an enviable collection of songs covered by other great artists including Status Quo with Rockin’ All Over the World and Tina Turner with Proud Mary.

Admittedly, Yorkshire is thousands of miles from California and the swamps of the Mississippi, but the music of Creedence Clearwater Revival and John Fogerty is being faithfully reproduced here by a group of musicians with the talent to really do justice to the magnificent songbook of hits.

Sadly, following almost a decade on the road, The Creedence Collection are calling it quits and playing their final ever show this Saturday night at The Civic Hall in Cottingham.

Playing electric and acoustic guitars, bass, drums, mandolin, keyboards and accordion, these experienced musicians present an evening filled with great songs. Tickets are available from the Civic Hall or by visiting www.seetickets. com

AMONG the other gigs of note this week includes this afternoon’s Wednesday get together at The Ryder on Coltman Street with Elvis tribute singer Alfie Pearson and resident compere Ric Owen.

Tomorrow night The Ritz Country Music Club on Holderness Road sees the return of guitar vocalist Chris Johnson and on Friday night local singer Louise is appearing at The Northfield in Withernsea.

On Saturday night you can see Gareth Edwards at The Welton Memorial Club and on Sunday night Danny Shenton is appearing at The New Walton Club on Walton Street.

Next Tuesday night The William Gemmell CMC on Anlaby Road features Hank Taylor.

FINALLY, I was thrilled to see Callum Scott’s guest appearance with the legendary Take That in The King’s Coronation Concert at the weekend.

Hull’s Callum and the NHS Choir made the city proud when they performed on Sunday night and they played a part in the making of history in the extravagant show put on for King Charles and Queen Camilla.

The concert was star-studded with the likes of Lionel Richie and Katy Perry taking the stage.

Popular Nineties boy band Take That also performed some of their songs and enthralled the audience when they invited Hull singersongwriter Calum Scott out on stage to perform their hit song The Greatest Day.

Callum Scott won The Hull Daily Mail’s Star Search competition way back in 2013 and last week he appeared in what was the biggest gig for years televised across the globe.

A remarkable journey for such a genuinely lovely guy.
