New roundabout is branded dangerous after two-car crash

PLEA FOR ‘GIVE WAY’ WARNING

A FRUSTRATED resident is urging East Riding Council to do something about a “dangerous” new roundabout in Boothferry Road, after capturing a collision on a security camera.

Footage shows the moment a silver car ignores the give way junction at the Boothferry Road/first Lane roundabout and collides with a black SUV, before losing control and skidding across the grass island at the centre of the roundabout. It then ends up on the other side of the road.

When completed last summer, the roundabout led to a change in traffic priority. Whereas at the old crossroads, traffic in Boothferry Road could flow straight on, drivers approaching the new roundabout must now give way to vehicles coming from the right.

While the video appears to show an example of poor awareness while driving, the resident, who asked not to be named, said the mistake was all too common. From his home he heard the beeping of car horns “daily”, because motorists were failing to realise that they had to give way, he added.

Despite there being a triangle on the road to indicate that motorists must give way at the junction, the resident believes the roundabout would benefit from a “give way” sign.

“East Riding Council haven’t put up any give way signs and I’m wondering why,” he said. “It’s going to end up with someone being seriously hurt.”

Work to create the roundabout began in August 2021, after East Riding Council said it was necessary to improve road safety. The £900,000 scheme involved reconfiguring the existing staggered crossroads.

Hull Live put the resident’s concerns to East Riding Council, who stood by the signs in place and said that the collision was one for the police to deal with.

A spokesman said: “Road accidents like this should be reported to the police.

“This roundabout has been open nearly a year and there are road signs in the lead up to it, and a speed limit in place. Drivers should always stop and give way at any junction.”

Residents had branded the old crossroads junction a “nightmare”, with some blaming the opening of the Tesco Express service station. Following a three-car collision in June 2018, one resident, who lived nearby, said: “There seems to be a crash every week, and it’s because the junction just isn’t laid out properly.

“We went to all the meetings when Tesco wanted to take over the petrol station on the corner of the junction, and we warned them more traffic would come because people treat it like a mini supermarket.

“We were told no problems would be caused, but there are accidents happening all of the time because people have to look three ways while coming out of the petrol station.”
