Peters’ tribute to Coote’s ‘level of professionalism’

HULL KR coach Willie Peters has described Lachlan Coote as the ultimate professional when paying tribute to his fullback, who will retire at the end of 2023.

The 33-year-old, who has played 26 times for the Robins since joining from Super League champions St Helens last year, will end a 15-year career that has seen him pick up silverware on both sides of the pond.

His exit will leave a big hole for Peters to fill but opens up a quota spot for the coach to utilise for 2024.

Asked about his thoughts on Coote’s decision to call it a day, the news didn’t come as a surprise to Peters, but he lauded the fullback at the pre-challenge Cup press conference.

The final curtain still has a while before it gets drawn, and the Scottish international has a big part to play before he hangs his boots up.

“He’s (Coote) an exceptional leader,” said Peters. “He’s one of the most professional players I’ve been involved with. The way he approaches his game, he has a great understanding. As a firstyear coach, he’s been exceptional for me, as have all the senior players.

“When he told me about his decision, I wasn’t overly surprised, but naturally, for anyone who has had the career he has, it’s an emotional time for everyone, mostly for Lachlan and his family.

“Laura and the family will go back to Australia at the end of the year. What I do know is Cootie will be all in until then and giving it everything.”

Currently nursing a hamstring tear that he sustained in the 28-0 victory over Huddersfield Giants, Coote is unavailable at the moment.

All being well, he could be back in the next three to four weeks, but what he is doing away from match days is just as important to Rovers’ progress.

“He’s injured at the moment, but he is helping out with players and acting as a coach,” said Peters.

“That’s great. I’m a big fan of player teaching. It shouldn’t always be dictated by coaches, and it’s powerful to get that message across. It not only helps the player but also Lachlan too. I know he’s invested.”

Reflecting on his career as a whole, Coote has won the NRL, Super League and Challenge Cup during his illustrious journey as a professional athlete.

He will be desperate to end his time at Craven Park with a trophy, and Peters knows he will continue to lead his troops when he returns from injury.

“He’s been exceptional; he’s won competitions over here and in the NRL. He wants to keep going. There are two trophies to go after, which every club are going for, but he leads the way in that. Lachlan is a winner; hopefully, we can send him out in the best way possible. Not getting ahead of ourselves, but we aspire to chase trophies. Lachlan will lead that.”
