DAVID ‘Burnsy’ Burns, the popular BBC Radio Humberside presenter, has announced the date of his last show.

The broadcaster is leaving the station as part of cuts to local radio stations.

He took to Twitter to tell fans that his final daytime show would be on Thursday, June 1.

Using an “over the hill” image to illustrate his tweet, he added: “Time to go. I still flip between anger and resignation but I’m a ninja on warm beaches and cold beer (hello #cleethorpes) so I’ll cope. Ta for the love. #savebbclocalradio.”

Last October, the BBC revealed plans to cut back on local radio programming, with content to be shared across neighbouring regions during parts of the day.

The move prompted an outcry and a petition was launched to save Burnsy, as his loyal listeners have always referred to him.

It has been signed by more than 5,000 people.

Followers described him as an “institution”, a “true asset” and a

“highly treasured member of local culture”.

They said the decision to axe him from the station was “terrible news” and an “abomination”.

Burnsy, who has also long been the voice of Hull City on the network, previously said: “The BBC has told me I won’t be needed as a presenter.

“I am eternally grateful to them for the opportunity, I’ve loved every minute, though the last few months have been unnecessarily painful.”

In response to the announcement of the final show, one follower said: “This is an absolutely terrible mistake by the BBC and a huge loss to the local community.

“I’m still holding out hope that the bonkers BBC management will belatedly see sense and scrap this madness.”

Another said: “I could not imagine a worse bit of self-sabotage (or own goal) by the BBC than this. Your show will be hugely missed mate.”

Hull West and Hessle MP Emma Hardy tweeted: “The BBC are making a big mistake. They need to reverse this decision quickly.”
