Hiku is a big signing for us, says KR’S Peters

Willie Peters believes Peta Hiku coming to Hull KR shows the ambition and long-term attractiveness of the

Robins.

The current New Zealand international will join Rovers on a three-year deal from 2024 and is a statement of intent by Peters.

Luring a current international from an elite country hasn’t been a regular occurrence at Craven Park, and with England representative Oliver Gildart also expected to be in Red and White next year, the calibre of players KR can sign is rapidly rising.

Likely to be Lachlan Coote’s replacement, Hiku’s future coach is over the moon to have captured the former Warrington Wolves ace.

Explaining his main qualities, Peters knows the supporters will already be eager to see the 30-yearold walk out in East Hull.

“It’s a great signing for the club,” said Peters.

“Obviously, a Test player at the international level who is proven at all levels of the game.

“His versatility will be huge for us, and he can play in a number of positions. We are looking at him to play fullback next year.

“It’s a position he played in earlier in his career, he’s played a lot of centre of late, but I see him as a rugby league player.

“He’s got a high level of footie knowledge, and his IQ is second to none. It will be a case of building him up in pre-season. But what we are bringing to the club is a really exciting signing.

“It shows where we are going as a club, and we can attract those sorts of players.

“We are doing a lot of great things off the pitch and are still building on the field. When I spoke to Peta, he understood our vision, and he wanted to be a part of it.

“That’s exciting. People want to play for the club for the right reasons.”

Penning a three-year deal with the Robins, Hiku could form a longterm spine partnership with Mikey Lewis and Jordan Abdull.

For Rovers’ younger players, having experienced stars sharing their knowledge is key for their development.

However, Peters is also confident what Hiku will bring off the field will be as important as the work he does on it.

“He understands the game and will bring plenty of footie smarts. He’s seen it all and has been in every scenario. He brings so much experience,” said Peters.

“Our young half-backs like Mikey Lewis are coming on leaps and bounds.

“Someone like Peta will be great for Mikey to have that fullback experience.

“He brings a wealth of that, but also, I’ve done plenty of homework on him, and he seems a quality person, and we are looking forward to welcoming his family over here. We are bringing people in for a reason.

“What he has done in the game speaks for itself, and he’s a leader.

“He is now a senior player for the Cowboys, and we set high standards for what a Hull KR player looks like. He fits that mould.”
