A POPULAR cycling event that was known for bringing huge crowds of people into Beverley town centre will return this summer for the first time in seven years.

The Beverley Grand Prix will see some of Britain’s best cyclists competing in a fast and furious circuit race around the historic streets of the town centre. Previous winners have included Ed Clancy, the threetime Olympic gold medallist.

Last staged in 2017, the event – part of the British Cycling National Circuit Series – will return on Friday, July 19. Councillor Anne Handley, the leader of East Riding Council, said: “I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to play our part in bringing this prestigious event back to Beverley. We are looking forward to a fantastic evening of competitive cycling around the town.”

The event will start at 4pm with a community ride giving families a chance to experience a nationallevel cycling event in the safety of closed roads around the town. This will be followed by multiple youth races and a support race.

To cap off the night, two headline races, for elite women and elite men, will be staged, with racing drawing to a close at around 10pm. Anthony Gill, the head of sport at British Cycling, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the return to Beverley for the sixth round of the 2024 National Circuit Series.

“At British Cycling, we have fond memories of the Beverley Grand Prix and cannot wait to return for some thrilling racing for spectators and fans of cycling to enjoy. A huge thank you must go to East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Beverley

Town Council and Generation Pro Cycling Events Ltd, who have been vital to seeing this event return for the first time since 2017.”

Councillor Nick Coultish, the council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, added: “Bringing this event back to Beverley just before the Olympic Games is a real coup for the council, and for the local area. I know that people will really enjoy coming along to see what promises to be an exciting and thoroughly enjoyable occasion.”
