Bringing a bit of ‘honky tonk’ from across the pond

INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED SARA PETITE BAND TAKE TO THE STAGE AT SPECIAL EVENT IN BEVERLEY

- The latest news from clubland with Dave Norman

NEXT Wednesday the 10th of April The Sun Inn on Flemingate in Beverley have a special event when the internationally acclaimed Sara Petite Band take to the stage.

All the way from San Diego in the USA, Sara plans to turn the Sun Inn into a veritable honky tonk when she makes her Beverley debut. An outlaw country headliner whose music reaches far beyond the many genre and borders of County music, Sara Petite has built an award-winning career with songs that owe as much to the rock & roll roadhouse as they do to honky-tonk.

It’s a raw, rough-edged version of American roots music, delivered by a five-time International song-writing competition finalist who’s spent nearly two decades calling her own shots. Sara has no interest in chasing trends but has worked hard instead, earning a wide range of accolades including Top 40 success on the Americana charts, international airplay, and more than a half-dozen trophies from the San Diego Music Awards.

When writing songs, Sara Petite takes inspiration from everywhere and she said: “When I first began playing shows, people used to tell me ‘You’ve got to pick a sound’ - I didn’t like that advice. I like to do things my way and that means going all over the map, from country to rock & roll to soul to punk. This music is my own and after all, it should sound like me!”

Her latest album release, The Empress, is her seventh record and marks a return to the mix of country twang and roots-rock. These 11 songs take place in dive bars, trailer parks, the throes of passion and Sara embodying her characters with ardour. The Empress is an album for all genders, stocked with songs that tackle struggles we all face. Sara added: “On this album I’m writing about my own life and the strong women I see in my world”.

Producer and Grammy nominee Eric Corne said: “The songs crackle with the energy of a live band whose performances match the material’s unique punch. It’s easy to understand why great musicians play with her, like piano player Bobby Fuego, who played with Leonard Cohen, and bass player Jorge Calderón, who worked with Warren Zevon. They’re the real deal, and so is she.” The show starts at 7.30pm opening at 7pm.

Tickets are £14 and for more information on how to purchase tickets check out The Sun Inn, Beverley Facebook page or call 07808-871118.

Not really recognised for his dancing prowess, local entertainer Lee Kamen has taken on the challenge of ‘Strictly Learn to Dance’ in aid of The Dove House Hospice.

Over the last few weeks Lee has been fundraising for the event that will see 12 couples take to the dance floor next Friday night at the Hull City Hall. Each couple has had to with doors learn two dances that they will perform on Friday night with the chance of winning the Glitter Ball trophy.

Rehearsals started back in January and each contestant had the challenge to raise a minimum of £500 for the event. Lee has held several fundraising events and he has managed to raise over £6,000 with the help and support of a plethora of entertainers, friends, family and all the venues who supported each event.

Lee has always been heavily involved in fundraising and I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing him and all of the other contestants the best of luck for Friday nights event.

I had the pleasure of working with the local vocalist Liam Patterson last week and was impressed with his excellent stage presence, range of songs and his interaction with the audience.

Liam has only just recently returned to the entertainment circuit after a short break and his great choice of songs showcased his vocal range and the wide variety of songs in his entertaining set. You can catch Liam Patterson when he appears on Sunday afternoon at the Ryder Club on Coltman Street and on Saturday the 27th of April at the Four In Hand pub on Holderness Road in Hull.

Amongst the other gigs of note this week includes this afternoon’s Wednesday ‘Get Together’ at The Ryder on Coltman Street with guest artiste Leah and resident compere Ric Owen.

Tonight, the Willows Country Music Club on Holderness Road features the highly entertaining country music artiste Johnny Flinton and on Friday night Paul Brian is appearing at the Northfield in Withernsea.

On Saturday night you can catch the sounds of the 60s with the covers band The Corsairs at the Hessle ExServicemen’s Club and on Sunday night the excellent Martin Jackson is singing at The New Walton Club on Walton Street.
