THIS WEEK officially marks the 50th anniversary of Humberside Fire and Rescue Service.

Since April 1, 1974, firefighters within the service - originally known as the Humberside Fire Brigade - have been saving lives and keeping our communities safe.

According to official figures, crews have attended a whopping 652,989 total incidents across the region in the last 50 years.

In a heartfelt and poignant tribute, the Chief Fire Officer, Phil Shillito, reflected upon the profound impact that the Service has had on countless lives during times of crisis in Humberside.

He said: “As we celebrate the milestone of our 50th year in 2024, we stand alongside numerous fire services across the country in acknowledging this significant achievement.

Throughout the past five decades, our dedicated staff, some of whom have served an impressive 50 years themselves, have responded to an astounding 652,989 incidents.

“Frequently working with partner agencies such as the Ambulance and Police services, as well as neighbouring Fire Services, our staff continue to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our communities.

“In this moment of reflection, we pay tribute to the memory of our dear colleagues who are sadly no longer with us.

“Their legacy remains deeply intertwined with the essence of our Service, and we pay tribute to their dedication and commitment to our communities.

“Looking ahead to the next 50 years presents unlimited possibilities for how we can continue to protect our communities and support our staff, offering care and

compassion to all.”

To help Humberside Fire and Rescue celebrate its golden anniversary, members of the public are invited to share their fond memories of the Service.

Whether it’s a recollection from a community event, a school visit that left a lasting impression, or their response to an emergency incident,

any and all stories are welcome.

Send your memories via email to corporatecommunication@humbersidefire.gov.uk along with any photos.

The Service will be featuring selected stories on their channels throughout the year to celebrate the incredible bond between them and the local communities they serve.
