DEFENDER INSISTS CITY CAN EXTEND SEASON

HULL City are under no illusions about the size of the task in front of them when they travel to face Watford on Saturday looking for a first Vicarage Road victory since December 2012.

That’s according to defender Matty Jacob who impressed on his return to the side in the 3-0 win over QPR at the weekend which kept City’s season alive, and their hopes, albeit faint, of clinching a play-off place intact.

City will head to Hertfordshire knowing only victory will realistically keep their hopes alive at least for another few days as they attempt to try and chase down in-form Norwich, who have a sixpoint buffer, albeit with one game less to play than Liam Rosenior’s Tigers.

Rosenior’s men have been drinking in the last chance saloon for a couple of weeks now, and having beaten Cardiff and QPR while drawing with play-off rivals Middlesbrough, are only too aware of the need for points.

“We still all believe we can do it,” a defiant Jacob told the Mail ahead of the trek down the M1.

“If we win our last four games, we’ve got seven (points) from the last three – if we get 12 from the next four, I think we all think that we’ll be right in there.

“We know we’ve got to be perfect, which sort of makes it easier because we just know that we need to win, we need to win until it’s over.”

Watford are working under their latest manager in caretaker boss Tom Cleverley.

While their home record is one of the worst in the league with just five wins all season, the former Hornets midfielder has collected some decent results during his short stint as temporary boss.

“Whenever a new manager comes in, the players will want to impress, whether it’s getting contracts or whether it’s to cement their place in the team for next season, they’ll still be right at it,” said Jacob.

“We won’t underestimate them, but we back ourselves against any team as you’ve seen plenty of times when we’ve played away; Southampton and Leicester, we will back ourselves.”
