A colonel in the Democratic Republbic of Congo army has been arrested over the killing of two UN sanctions monitors, the first member of the security services detained in the case.

A Swedish and a US national were killed in March 2017 while investigating reports of atrocities during an armed conflict in the country’s Kasai region between government forces and militia.

Congolese authorities initially blamed the militia, but later admitted state agents may have been involved. Officials said Colonel Jean de Dieu Mambweni had been arrested but no formal charges had yet been filed.
