Apply an EDM filter effect
1 Master Track
Starting with a looping pre-populated EDM project of seven tracks, all containing Apple Loops and Drummer Magnus, we navigate to Track>show Master Track from the top menu.
2 Plugin picking
With Master Track selected, show the Smart Controls with the B key. Click inside a vacant slot from the Output plugin’s inspector and pick Filter>autofilter from the menu.
3 Autofilter settings
Hover over the middle of the added plugin and click the middle button to have the floating Autofilter window show in the top corner and survey the various slider controls.
4 Cutoff control
The first ‘Cutoff’ slider is set to 100 by default, thus effectively being off. Reduce this control manually during playback to preview how it filters out EQ frequencies.
5 Resonance slider
Resonance situated below then amplifies certain frequencies to add a swirling phaserlike effect to heighten the end result when used in combination with Cutoff filtering.
6 Show Automation
We will use automation curves to move these sliders, so pick Mix>show Automation or press the A key. We’ve also cycle looped the end eight bars where the effect will span.
7 Cutoff curve
In the track header automation menu pick Cutoff from Output and click three points on the automation curve, dragging the middle one down to swoop to 20 then back up to 100.
8 Resonance curve
Next select Resonance from the Output category of the track header automation menu and again click three points on the curve, dragging the middle point up to around 70.
9 Added Intensity
Lastly, we’ve selected Intensity from Output>autofilter and again plotted three points, dragging the middle one up to 15 to complete the effect before playing to preview.
