Discover new ways of working

1 The default Dock

The Dock on the ipad is very similar to the Dock on the Mac and at its simplest level it is used to start apps. Tap an icon in the Dock to open an app, but there is more.

2 Add more apps

Press and drag an icon on the screen and as it hovers over the Dock the other icons shift around to make space for it. Drop it to add it. Up to 13 apps can be in the dock.

3 Configure dock settings

Go to Settings> general> multitasking & Dock. Enable ‘Show Suggested and Recent apps’. This adds three spaces at the right side of the Dock for recent apps you have used.

4 Drag recent apps

If you want to make an often-used app permanent, drag it from the recent apps area on the right over to the left of the vertical divider and drop it in the permanent area.

5 Remove recent apps

Long-press on an app in the Dock and apps on the right jiggle with ‘–’ icons on them. Press the ‘–’ to remove an app from the recently used apps list on the right.

6 Create Slide Overs

It is possible to work on two apps at the same time on the ipad with a Slide Over. Open one app, like Safari, then press and drag another app up the screen from the Dock.

7 Use Slide Overs

Drop the app to open it in a panel on the right which allows you to use it while still viewing the other app in the background. Press and slide it left or right to move it.

8 Use Split View

Another way to use two apps is to use Split View. Press an app in the Dock and slide your finger up and to the right, then slide it down and let go. It snaps in place.

9 Master three apps

This is probably the hardest trick to master, but after creating a Split View screen with two apps, drag a third from the dock up the screen to create a Slide Over.
