Winner of the 2018 Creative Toy Of The Year award, the Droid Inventor kit is one of the latest products by Littlebits and is an electronics kit that offers the creation of a real-life Star Wars droid for the young, and the young at heart. The kit is a great learning tool for teaching children about how circuitry works as well as the basics of coding and programming. Not only that but there are also countless different configurations of this droid so you can continuously create unique and custom droids to suit your liking.

The assembly is very straightforward thanks to a free IOS app that connects via Bluetooth to your droid and this also acts as a remote control when your droid is up and running. The in-app instructions (or ‘missions’) begin with the basics, but soon move onto more complex and impressive feats, such as getting your droid to draw shapes and navigate around objects.

Go create!

The app allows you to fully control your droid using either manual controls or using the blockbased drag-and-drop coding system, which is great for people who would like to get into coding but want to start off with something easier. Using the tools provided you can make your droid wave, self-navigate and much more, but you are also encouraged to experiment to see what you can get your R2 unit to do. Educational and fun!

Verdict

An engaging ‘toy’ for kids and adults alike who are interested in Star Wars, electronics and even basic coding.
