During the winter season the shorter days and overcast weather can make it a challenge to capture a wellexposed shot. On Auto mode your camera may need to use a higher ISO speed to make its sensor more sensitive to light. However, this can lead to the presence of nasty luminance or chrominance noise, especially in under-exposed areas that have been brightened up using the Photos app’s tools. Unlike the organic clumps of film grain in analogue prints, harsh dots of digital noise are generally considered to be ugly and undesirable (especially if you’re trying to get them past a stock photo site’s quality control). Fortunately, Apple’s Photos has tools to smooth out nasty noise without blurring important details.
