Macbooks and imacs are self-maintaining, aren’t they? In theory, yes they are, but in practice they sometimes are not. Problems can occur when macos and apps become out of date and contain bugs. Some Macbooks have just 128GB of storage, and it is easily filled, so you have to keep an eye on space usage. The file system used on internal and external drives can develop errors that could grow into ones that affect performance or reliability. It is better to prevent problems than to fix them afterwards as sometimes small problems grow and fixing them early on is easier, such as testing drives with First Aid and running maintenance scripts.
