This app appears to beat to its own drum, and it is rather frustrating. Just trying to get started with it proved troublesome: signing up for the three-day trial to remove ads and unlock premium content had no effect, and we tried in vain to get the package to email a password after we sought to register. It wasn’t the best of starts.

From there we continued to feel rather unimpressed with this music-making board, in part thanks to the all-too-frequent ads. It was also down to the redesign for version 5.0, which is already feeling pretty dated. Thankfully, the range of bass, drum and tunes sound professional, and it’s very easy to create a decent tune with minimal effort. At the very least it instantly invites play. One of the strengths of DJ Mix Pads 2 is its community, and there is joy to be had in perusing the charts that are filled with tunes others have recorded, presumably having avoided the issues we had. You can flick between the new additions and tunes that are liked and rated highly. Here it is also possible to check out specific users and listen to the tunes that they have created.

The songs you produce yourself can be recorded and saved. You also have a good range of effects at your disposal, from pitch, distort and delay to reverb, chorus and filters. These allow you to put a unique spin on the sounds you’re creating, and there are lots of genres from which to choose together with mic recording for custom sounds. Unfortunately, it just isn’t slick enough and some of the UI elements can be frustrating.

Verdict

A frustrating music creator that nevertheless has a social community of tune-makers, but there are better options.
