Dictate instead of typing

Don’t be shy – speaking your text instead of typing it is a great time-saver and the results are generally very accurate. Here’s how to set it up and use it on Mac and IOS

-

1 Turn on Dictation

Go to System Preferences>keyboard> Dictation and turn the feature on. You can also set up a shortcut here to launch the service. Click on the ‘Shortcut’ menu and choose one or create your own.

2 Enable offline

Tick ‘Use Enhanced Dictation’ to use the feature offline (without this box ticked everything you say will be sent to Apple for analysis!). It requires a download so make sure you have space available.

3 Select mic

Finally, click on the menu under the microphone icon and select ‘Internal Microphone’ You’re now good to go. While using an Apple app like Notes, activate your Dictation shortcut and start talking.

1 Turn on Dictation

Go to Settings>general>keyboard and then scroll down to the bottom of the screen and turn on the ‘Enable Dictation’ option. That is the sum total of setting up on IOS, so let’s start using the service.

2 Using dictation

In any app that uses a keyboard to type, tap on the microphone key between the emoji key and the spacebar and a waveform will appear at the bottom indicating sound input. Start speaking!

3 Instant results

As you speak, your words will be processed and converted into typed text. If the results aren’t perfect you can jump in and start correcting things manually. Tap the keyboard icon to end the dictation.
