Control Centre

Notes will be accessed through the Control Centre, but first it must be configured. Open Settings on the iphone and find and tap Control Centre>customise Controls.

Safety vs convenience

If you value safety over convenience, select ‘Always Create New Note’. This means that if someone else picks up your iphone and opens Notes, they’ll just see a new blank note.

Add Notes

Look down the ‘Include’ list and see if Notes is present. If it is not, find it in the ‘More Controls’ section below and tap the ‘+’ button to add it. Drag to re-order the apps.

Choose note options

Choose ‘Resume Last Note’ and settings appear. Choose ‘Created on Lock Screen’ for security and choose how long to wait before creating a new note from five minutes.

Notes settings

With Notes in your Control Centre, return to Settings and open the Notes settings. Swipe to the bottom and then tap ‘Access Notes from Lock Screen (via Control Centre)’.

Test Notes

To see the feature in action, turn off the screen, turn it back on and then open the Control Centre. Try it with your thumb over the Face ID camera.

Control Centre Notes

We added the Notes app as the last item in Control Centre, but your layout may be different. The icon is fairly obvious though – tap it to begin writing a note.

Write notes

What you see depends on the Notes settings in Step 5 and you will either create a new note or continue with a previously created note. All the usual features are present.

Lock or load

Press ‘Done’ when you are finished. What appears next depends on who is creating the note. If Face ID recognises you, the Notes app appears, but it won’t if it is not you.
