Shoot, import and edit slo-mo clips
1 Choose a setting
On your iphone, navigate to Settings> Camera and tap on ‘Record Slo-mo’. The default is 720p HD at 240fps. For a slower moving HD clip, tap 1080p HD at 240fps.
2 Shoot slo-mo
Using the Camera app, swipe to ‘Slo-mo’. Tap record to capture the action. On an iphone 11 Pro you can toggle between a 240 and 120 frame-rate by tapping in the top-left.
3 View your footage
To view your slo-mo footage on the iphone, go to Photos. Head to Albums>media Types and tap ‘Slo-mo’. All your slo-mo clips will be displayed as thumbnails.
4 Adjust speed boundary
Tap a thumbnail, then ‘Edit’. Each clip plays in real time at the start and end. Below the filmstrip is a speed boundary slider that lets you choose when the clip switches to slo-mo.
5 Export slo-mo
If you have your IOS Photos app set to sync to icloud Photos (which you can do in Settings>photos), then the slo-mo clips will be viewable in your desktop Photos app.
6 Set up imovie
Launch imovie. By default, the application will play slo-mo clips in real time. To make it play clips in slow motion, go to Preferences and then tick the slo-mo clips box.
7 Access Slo-mo album
In imovie’s Library panel click on Photos. In the ‘My Media’ panel set the dropdown menu to ‘Albums’. Here you can access the footage synced to Photos via icloud.
8 Add to timeline
Drag a clip from the ‘Slo-mo’ album into the timeline. imovie indicates the slow motion footage by applying a tortoise icon to it. The start and end of the clip play in real time.
9 Adjust speed boundary
Drag the filmstrip icon to change where the clip switches between slow motion and real time. You can also make the clip slower or faster by dragging the re-time handles.
