THIS INTRIGUING MYSTERY GAME is straight from the David Lynch school of weirdness, where people are strange and everything isn’t quite what it seems. As the eponymous hitchhiker, you have no memory and no destination and so must rely on conversations with your rides to piece together your past.
The game confines the action to the inside of the car, creating a claustrophobic playing area where your options seem very limited. There are a few objects to examine and interact with, but the narrative is driven by the conversations you have with the drivers who pick you up. It works pretty well but the endlessly looping terrain gets a bit jarring – or is that the idea?
Verdict
Hitchhiker certainly dares to be different by generating a tense, unnerving game in a shoebox environment.
