The largely neglected Terminal can be used to tweak all manner of system behaviours, to help speed up your daily usage. From automating repetitive tasks to enabling functions that would otherwise be out of reach, the Terminal is one of the most powerful apps available within macos. It can be the icing on the cake of your Mac supercharging project.
1 Automatic restarts
Input‘ sudosy stem set upset restart freeze on’ to make your Mac sense a crash and automatically restart. It only saves a few seconds, but it helps to speed things up.
4 Tiny improvements
To highlight the tiny improvements you can make ‘defaults write com.apple.dock autohide-delay -float 0’ followed by ‘killall Dock’ will make the Dock appear faster.
2 Hold and repeat
The command ‘defaults write -g Apple press and holden able d-bool FALSE’ will repeat letters and numbers when you hold the keys. These time savers really do help.
5 Speed up Spotlight
‘sudo mdutil -E /Volumes/drivename’ will rebuild your Spotlight and help with any stability problems your Mac has. It should also speed up performance in the short-term.
3 Quicker macos updates
Change the macos update checking schedule from weekly to daily, using ‘defaults write com. apple. software update Schedule frequency-int 1’.
6 Shutdowns and restarts
Instantly shut down your Mac with ‘$ sudo shutdown -h now’ and restart it immediately with ‘$ sudo shutdown -r now’. This is useful if you are in a rush and need to leave urgently.
