Edit clips and cutaways together

1 Import clips

Click on Projects>create New>movie. Click ‘OK’. Click the ‘Import Media’ button. Select our 10 clips. Click ‘Import Selected’ to bring them into imovie.

2 Add to timeline

As you move the cursor over each clip, a label will pop up to show you its name. Shift+click to select Clips 01 and 02. Press cmd+w to add them to the timeline.

3 Cutaway

Drag Clip03 onto the timeline. Place it on a parallel layer above the end of Clip02. This cutaway clip shows a close-up of the lobster pots while the man talks about them in Clip02.

4 Detach audio

Add Clip04. The seagull’s call is out of sync. Cmd+click on the clip, then ‘Detach Audio’. Drag the green audio clip to the right so that it syncs with the seagull.

5 Zoom out

Hold down the shift key and click to select Clips05-09. Drag and drop them after the seagull clip. Press cmd+z to zoom the timeline’s thumbnails so we can see them all.

6 Fade audio

Drag Clip10 onto the layer above the end of Clip09 to show the man’s POV of the rock’s hole. Drag the cutaway clip’s volume bar down to 0% to remove extra sound.

7 Add titles

Click on the Titles browser. Slide the cursor across a title’s thumbnail to preview its animation. Drag a title to the timeline. Edit its text in the Viewer.

8 Add music

Go to Audio. Click on ‘Sound Effects’. Browse to ‘Jingles’. Click ‘Time’ to group tracks by duration. ‘First Snowfall’ matches the sequence. Reduce its volume to 5%.

9 Share it

Choose File>share>youtube & Facebook. Our 4K clips are massive, so set the ‘Resolution’ drop-down to a smaller HD setting of 1280 x 720. Click Next>save.
