Add vintage newsreel artefacts
1 Add assets
Import our four supplied video clips into a new Event. Press cmd and click to select each clip in the project bin. Press W to add them to the timeline in numerical order. 2 Add effect
Press cmd+5 for the Effects browser. Drag Aged Film onto the timeline’s first clip. Go to the Aged Film section in the Video Inspector (cmd+4). Drag Color Adjust to -1.0. 3 Add artefacts
In the Inspector’s Aged Film panel increase Scratches to 13, Dust to 60, Hairs to 7 and Jitter Amount to 0.11. Reduce the Volume of the clip to 0 for a silent movie. 4 Change shape
To give our 16:9 widescreen clip a retro 4:3 shape go to Masks in the Effects browser. Drag the Shape Mask effect onto Clip01 in the timeline. Set Curvature to 0. 5 Copy and paste
On Clip01 choose Edit>copy. Shift-click to select Clip02, Clip03 and Clip04. Choose Edit>page Effects. Click ‘Paste’ to apply the vintage effects and the volume change. 6 Add first keyframes
Place the playhead at 30 sec. In the Aged Film panel click the Amount attribute’s Add a keyframe icon. In Shape Mask click the Radius attribute’s ‘Add a keyframe’ icon. 7 Add second keyframes
Scrub the playhead to 32 sec. Drag the Aged Film Amount slider to 0. A new keyframe is set automatically. Set the Shape Mask’s Radius slider to 1000 for a 16:9 shape. 8 Test the result
Play Clip04. It now animates smoothly from a retro 4:3 black and white vintage film into a full-colour 16:9 HD clip, as we travel from the past to the present day. 9 Finishing touches
In Transitions (shift+cmd+5) add a Centre wipe to the start of the sequence. From the Audio sidebar drag the Movie Projector sound effect onto the timeline.
