Step-by-step
Cut multiple shots together
1 Import clips
Create a new imovie project then click on the Import Media button. Browse to select our 14 supplied clips and choose ‘Import All’. The clips will appear in the My Media panel.
2 Skimmer info
To help you identify specific clips more easily go to View and tick ‘Skimmer Info’. Now when you place the cursor over a clip a label appears showing the clip’s name.
3 Establishing shots
Click and drag to select the first two clips. A yellow box indicates your selection. Press W to add the two clips to the timeline. These shots introduce the car and driver.
4 Stabilise
Add Clips 03 and 04. Click on Clip 04. Click the Stabilisation icon. Tick ‘Stabilise Shaky Video’. 33% smooths wobbles without cropping too much of the edge.
5 Make some moves
Add Clips 05-07. In Clip 05, we held the iphone out of the window to film the jeep’s spinning wheel, then panned to reveal the landscape without a cut.
6 Details
Add Clips 08-10. In Clip 08 we focused on the retro vehicle’s hand-operated window wiper. Clip 07’s mirror enables us to grab a cheeky selfie.
7 Get out!
No road trip film is complete without an external shot of the car in motion. In Clip 12 we chose an interesting section of road and filmed the jeep driving past us.
8 Cutaway
Drag Clip 13 onto a parallel layer above Clip 12. This close-up of the driver operating the horn adds variety to the sequence as he honks at the dog to get out of the way.
9 High angle
Add Clip 14. By shooting from a bridge we captured a drone-like angle. Tracking from the tree to reveal the cars on the bridge adds a final cinematic camera move.
