Capture high-quality sound
Step-by-step
1
Skimmer info
Import our clips into a new project. To identify each clip go to the View menu and turn on ‘Skimmer Info’. A label appears when you move the cursor over a clip.
2 iphone mic
Drag the ‘iphone Mic’ clip into the timeline and play it. The subject’s voice is being picked up by the iphone’s mic but it’s being drowned out by the waves and wind.
3
Gun mic
Attaching a Joby Wavo Plus to our iphone improved the quality. The directional mic listens to the subject in front of the camera but picks up less of the wave sounds.
4
Reduce rumble
Add the ‘Wavo Plus’ clip. The voice sounds clearer but we still hear rumbling wind sounds. Click on the Noise Reduction icon. Tick ‘Reduce background noise’.
5
Adjust amount
This Reduce tool does a good job of lessening the wind rumble but it makes the voice a bit sharp. Experiment with the slider to get a compromise.
6
Low levels
The combination of the Joby Wavo Plus gun mic and the noise reduction filter makes the voice sound better, until the subject walks away from the mic…
7
Wireless
To pick up the voice from a greater distance, we clip a Smallrig transmitter to the subject and attach the receiver to our iphone. The wind shield reduces rumble.
8
Louder!
The wireless mic does a great job of picking up his voice regardless of distance. To give it a bit more of a boost click the Volume icon above the viewer, then ‘Auto’.
9
Voiceover
Another way to provide clear, clean sound for your imovie productions is to plug a USB mic into your Mac and choose Window>record Voiceover.
